How many different types of hydrangea are there?
Hydrangeas are one of the best flowers to decorate your garden if you live in a country with a humid climate: not only do they thrive the most in humid weather, they are easy to grow, need very little maintenance and they are unbelievably lush and beautiful !
If you have paid attention to hydrangeas, you might have noticed there are 3 different types: white, blue and pink. However, those are not really the “different varieties at all” ! All the three colours can appear in the same variety and they are influenced by the PH of the soil.
A lot of people influence the colour of their hydrangeas by adding calcium, rocks or minerals that alter the PH of the soil they are planted in to create bushes with the exact colour that they want.
So, how many varieties of hydrangeas is there ?
There are numerous different varieties of hydrangeas, all with its particular needs, ways to grow, requirements and looks. Some of the most popular types are:
–Mophead Hydrangea: with large flowerheads, this is the most well known type. They tend to grow into very large bushes.
–Lacecap Hydrangeas: Very similar to mop heads, this type of hydrangea has a smaller bloom.
–Mountain Hydrangea: Extremely hardy this type is great for extreme climates, especially cold.
–Panicle Hydrangea: Famous for their cone shaped flowerhead, and big and long leaves, these hydrangeas are very decorative.
–Smooth Hydrangea: These beautiful hydrangeas grow up on round shrubs, making “bouquets”. They tolerate hotter climates very well.
–Oakleaf Hydrangea: This lovely hydrangea has leaves that look extremely similar to those of oaks.
These are only some of the most popular types: in fact, there are so many types that it is difficult to compile them all in a single article! Hydrangeas are a beautiful, hardy plant that grows well in all sorts of climates!
